Black in Robotics Chapter Guidelines

In order to establish a Black in Robotics chapter in your region, the following guidelines must be adhered to:

  • Requests for chapter launches will be sent to the BiR national organizers who will approve the chapter initiation process. BiR will launch a maximum of one chapter a quarter (3 months).

  • Local BiR chapters must have a leadership team consisting of  3-10 members, that ideally consist of at least one academic professional (educator), industrial professional, and student (undergraduate, graduate and postdoc). Terms associated with the leadership team should be set for a minimum of 6 months.

    • Having diverse members from the primary components of the robotics community will help ensure each sub-community is engaged and served by local BiR initiatives.

  • Local BiR chapters activities may include

    • Holding professional development and networking events (both local and national integrative events)

    • Holding outreach events to engage with the larger community (at various academic levels: K-12, higher education)

    • Facilitating connections for job and research opportunities (academic/industry) geared towards BiR members and URM community

  • Communications Guidelines: chapter will adhere to the social media posting policy, and all chapter members will adhere to BiR code of conduct

    • As chapter communication reflects the larger BiR community, official public statements (non-related to expected activities promotion),  must be made under the approval of the national BiR outreach and communications committee.

  • Local BiR Chapters should vote on the core leadership team every (1-2 years) or when a vacancy occurs.

  • Local BiR Chapters should send representatives to annual/bi-annual national BiR meetings

    • Chapters will provide a (brief) report of activities (based on a template) to the national BiR organizers annually.

  • Funds obtained and provided to local BiR chapters under the umbrella of the non-profit national BiR organization will be facilitated by the national BiR organization’s finance management arm.

  • During the initial launch of the chapter, the national BiR organizers will co-facilitate the initiation of the chapter.
